Living with depression in Nanaimo

You wake up tired, even after a full night's sleep. Things you used to enjoy feel flat, and small tasks like replying to a text or making dinner take more than you have. Some days feel like running on empty. Others feel numb, as if you are watching your life from a distance.

You may have tried pushing through, thinking more positively, or waiting for it to pass. Often that helps for a day or two, and then the weight returns. Depression is a health condition, and it tends to respond better to real support than to willpower.

Many people in Nanaimo carry this quietly while still showing up for work, school, and family. You do not have to wait until it gets worse to ask for help.

What depression counselling involves

Counselling for depression, explained simply

Depression counselling is a series of private conversations with a trained counsellor. Together you look at what is driving your low mood, what keeps it going, and which changes would make daily life lighter. Therapy for depression is not about talking you out of how you feel. It gives you room to be honest about it, and practical ways to respond.

Signs that often lead people to seek depression counselling

  • Sadness, emptiness, or irritability that lasts most days
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Feeling worthless, guilty, or disconnected from people

You do not need a diagnosis to book. Counselling can stand on its own or work alongside care from your family doctor.

If you are thinking about harming yourself or are in immediate danger, call or text 9-8-8, Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline, or call 911. Counselling at Covalent is not an emergency service.

Our approach to depression therapy in Nanaimo

Led by Katelin Wyness, M.Couns., RCC

Covalent Counselling is led by Katelin Wyness, M.Couns., RCC, a Registered Clinical Counsellor and BCACC member. Our team draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, somatic therapies, and EMDR where it fits. You and your counsellor decide on the mix that suits you.

Depression rarely arrives alone. It often travels with grief and loss, trauma, burnout, or a major life transition, and sometimes with anxiety. See our anxiety and depression counselling page for that overlap. With a team of more than eight counsellors, each with different specialties, we can often pair you with someone who understands what you are carrying.

Support is also available for depression counselling for teens. You can meet the counsellors on our Our Team page.

Notice small shifts

Progress is often gradual. You review what is working, adjust the plan, and build skills to rebuild energy, interest, and connection.

What progress in depression therapy looks like

Small changes often come first

Many people notice change in small, ordinary moments first: getting out of bed with a little less dread, calling a friend back, or enjoying a meal again. Over time, counselling for depression can help you rebuild energy, interest, and connection at a pace that feels manageable.

Therapy also helps you recognise early warning signs and respond sooner. A rough week then becomes easier to ride out, and less likely to turn into a rough season. Every person's path is different, and no counsellor can promise a specific result or timeline.
